Pair of painted antique cast iron andirons featuring standing figures each with one hand holding a sword. The best-known pattern of early 19th century cast andirons is that of Hessian Soldiers. Believed to be inspired by the dislike of mercenary troops brought here by the British in the American Revolution, they were being burned in effigy. Good condition structurally, with scattered paint loss and rust.
9.5" wide, 21" deep, 20" high.
