An authentic Japanese isho tansu (clothing chest) crafted from kiri (paulownia) wood with original iron hardware. This traditional piece is composed of three stacking sections plus a separate base, a hallmark of tansu construction that allowed for easier transport and flexibility in the home. The upper section features sliding doors above a row of smaller drawers, while the lower sections feature four full-width drawers for ample storage. Built during the Meiji to TaishÅ period (circa early 20th century), it reflects the clean lines and quiet elegance of Japanese design, emphasizing balance, function, and the beauty of natural wood grain. Lightweight yet sturdy, kiri wood was favored for kimono chests because of its resistance to insects and humidity. The chest retains its original forged-iron pulls and corner fittings. Good vintage condition with wear consistent with age, including surface marks, oxidation to hardware, and normal separations or cracks in the back panels and drawer bottoms from natural wood movement over time. The locks are not functional, and a hole in the back panel was added later. The drawers work well for a tansu. One of the pop-up side handles is missing, and another is broken. Structurally sound, with a rich, even patina that highlights its history and craftsmanship.
