Full of joy and good energy, this vintage hand-carved wood statue of Ho-tai, the "Laughing Buddha", makes an uplifting and charismatic statement. Likely originating from Southeast Asia, possibly Thailand or Indonesia, this expressive figure is depicted in a celebratory pose with arms raised overhead in a gesture of abundance and happiness. Carved from solid wood with a dark, warm patina, the figure features beautifully rendered robes, expressive hands, and a broad, beaming smile. The Buddha’s exaggerated belly, traditionally a symbol of prosperity, is a focal point that invites laughter and luck. Estimated to date from the mid-20th century, the statue shows visible age-related wear that adds to its vintage character. A deep vertical split runs down the belly, with additional cracks, nicks, and a worn fingertip on one hand. The figure remains sturdy and displays wonderfully. The base is felted for surface protection, although the felt is very thin after so many years of use. A joyful, high-spirited sculpture perfect for entryways, altars, or any space that could use a little more laughter and light. Cracks, wear, and finish loss consistent with age. One hand has a worn tip. Structurally solid and full of character.
10" wide, 7.75" deep, and 19" high.
