Japanese Three-Piece Stacking Tansu Chest – $1395

Japanese three-piece stacking tansu chest with a combination of drawers and doors that open to offer ample storage. The bottom piece has trim at the base and consists of two full-length drawers. The middle section has three drawers beneath sliding doors behind which are two small drawers with open space above on one side and a fixed height shelf on the other side. This section is missing the wood on the back, which could be replaced or could be used as is. The top unit has cabinet doors that swing out and four removable, full-length shallow drawers inside. It is fairly light-colored for a tansu, with the expected lightweight wood with minimal iron accents and handles, and on the sides of each piece are the traditional iron handles that pop up to thread a piece of bamboo for easy carrying. It has square wooden nails in the wood, small round metal nails in the metal, and modern screws on the insides of the locks that may have been added later. There is no key, but all the doors and drawers are unlocked. Very good vintage condition other than the missing back piece, with some expected patina for age and use.

48.5" wide, 49" wide at the base, 17" deep, 17.5" deep at the base, 68.75" high, 69.25" high at the handles on the sides.
