A powerful and expressive Japanese theater mask, hand-carved and finished with black lacquer, red lips, and painted teeth. The exaggerated features and broad grin suggest a Kyogen comedic character, traditionally used in lighthearted interludes of the Noh theater. The reverse retains its original paper label with brush-written calligraphy and a red seal, identifying it as a Ko-omote mask within the Noh tradition. Ko-omote is one of the most iconic roles, representing youthful presence on stage. This label indicates workshop provenance and points to production in the early–mid 20th century (ca. 1920s–1950s). The surface shows rich patina and areas of wear, consistent with vintage age and handling, which only adds to its theatrical authenticity. Masks of this type were carved for performance as well as for collectors of Japanese folk and performance art. An impressive piece for display on the wall, mounted on a stand, or as part of a collection of Japanese or Asian antiques. A striking conversation piece that embodies both drama and history. The mask shows areas of surface wear and lacquer loss, most notably along the forehead, cheeks, and sides, and paint loss to the lips, which are consistent with age and handling. The interior retains its original cord tie and a paper workshop label with calligraphy and a red seal, both showing natural age toning. Overall, the mask remains structurally sound and visually compelling, with patina and wear that enhance its vintage character.

8.25" wide, 5" deep, and 11" high.
